Historic Garden Week: Touring Richmond's Beautiful Homes and Gardens

It's an event that we love to support because it showcases the natural beauty of communities across Virginia, highlights their unique histories and allows members of the Garden Club of Virginia to show off their incredible creative talents. This year's Historic Garden Week is already around the corner, so let's dive deep into what you can expect from this wonderful state-wide event.

The story behind Historic Garden Week
Historic Garden Week traces its roots back nearly a century to 1927, when members of the Garden Club of Virginia raised $7,000 – a very impressive sum when converted to modern money – to save trees originally planted by Thomas Jefferson. Today, the Garden Club of Virginia has more than 3,400 members in 48 member clubs spread across every corner of our great Commonwealth.
In addition to being a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and see beautiful places in Virginia, Historic Garden Week is also an important fundraiser for the Garden Club of Virginia. Proceeds from the event support the preservation and restoration of public gardens across Virginia, as well as providing grants for research fellowships. -
The essentials for Historic Garden Week 2025
This year's Historic Garden Week takes place April 26 – May 3, 2025, with tours available at locations across Virginia. You can purchase tickets online for Historic Garden Week tours in a wide range of communities, including Albemarle County, Ashland-New Kent, Clarke County, Danville-Chatham, Eastern Shore, Franklin, Front Royal and Gloucester-Mathews. The tours are all spread out on different days of Historic Garden Week, making it possible to attend multiple tours in different locations throughout the event.
Need help planning? The Garden Club of Virginia offers a selection of suggested itineraries, each focusing on a specific region of Virginia and making it so you can see as many tours in that area as possible. Just remember that tickets are required, wherever you plan to take a tour. -
Historic Garden Week in Richmond
In total, Historic Garden Week features 29 tours to choose from, and of course, there are a variety of different tours near Richmond homes for sale that you can enjoy. Richmond-specific Historic Garden Week tours include Richmond: Lower Tuckahoe, West on April 29, 2025, Richmond: Pope Avenue on April 30, 2025 and Richmond: Chatham Hills on May 1, 2025. Each Richmond tour takes you to gardens in a different part of the city and many Historic Garden Week tours include access to private homes that are only available to be toured during this event. Between all of the Historic Garden Week tours, more than 120 private homes and gardens are included. -
