With spring just around the corner, trees and plants are showing signs of new growth, green leaves, and early blooms. Our real estate agents think it's the perfect time to get outside and plant your Richmond garden so that you can enjoy all the benefits of National Garden Month in April.
On a beautiful spring day, there's nothing quite like planting new seeds and watching them grow. If you're ready to give it a try, it's time to roll up your sleeves and turn your Richmond garden into something spectacular.
Planting Annuals and Perennials
April is a great month to plant annuals and perennials in your garden, but first, you should know the difference. Annuals have a lifespan of one year, so they must be replanted the following season. Perennials grow back every spring, so you only need to plant them once.
Planting annuals in garden beds or pots marks the beginning of a season-long show of eye-catching flowers. Annuals are usually planted during the spring and summer months, unfurling flowers and colorful foliage until frost arrives. Some annuals thrive in the sun, and others prefer shade and cooler temperatures, Before planting annuals, it's best to check planting, growth, and care requirements with a local garden center.
Perennials can be planted any time during the growing season until the ground freezes, but for best results, they should be planted during spring or fall. Since perennials come back each year, many are bulbs rather than small plants. Whether you plant spring or fall perennials, they need plenty of room to grow and spread in your garden. Even without visible foliage, perennials will still send out roots underground until they go dormant when the ground freezes.
Planting Vegetable Gardens
If you enjoy cooking, you may want to plant a vegetable garden that fills your yard with color and provide herbs and veggies for the kitchen. Just like flower gardens, vegetable gardens can be planted in the spring and the fall.
Eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes can be started indoors then transplanted into the garden in late April.
If you like the idea of growing yummy summer vegetables, you should start planting your garden in mid-April. Imagine your endless cooking possibilities with a vegetable garden filled with asparagus, beans, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, corn, cucumbers, okra, and squash.
Proper maintenance is essential to keep your flower and vegetable gardens blooming and healthy. Here are some helpful tips:
Mulch garden beds early in the spring
Apply a light application of 10-10-10 fertilizer over perennial beds
Deadhead perennials after flowering to extend bloom times
Cut back and fertilize spring-flowering shrubs after flowering
Weed your garden beds every week during the growing seasons
Keep your gardening tools, hoses, and sprinklers in good condition
All flower and vegetable gardens are subjected to a variety of harmful pests that can destroy plants. You can protect your gardens with organic pest control products and barriers made from fabrics, fencing, or mesh around the planting area. Diatomaceous earth, a non-toxic natural product, hinders the movement of pests in and around fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

And there's still time to sign up! There are plenty of Richmond homes for sale that put you just a stone's throw away from where the action will be. Here's what to expect.
The VCU Health Richmond Marathon will be held Saturday, November 13th, beginning at 7:45 am. Heralded as "America's Friendliest Marathon," anyone 16 years or older can sign up to run. Registration spots had initially all been filled, but due to popular demand, more spots have been added for those still wishing to run. However, be advised that anyone signing up at this point will receive their medal by mail sometime in early 2022 rather than on race day.
Registering for the VCU Health Richmond Marathon is also a great way to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Unlike Richmond, Boston has strict time requirements you must meet, based on your age and gender, if you want to run in the marathon. Richmond is one of the most popular qualifiers for running in Boston.
If you sign up for the marathon between now and November 7th, you'll pay a $130 entry fee. If you wait until the last minute and sign up in the week leading up to the race, that goes up to $140. However, anyone who makes a $50 to Kids Run RVA can get $20 knocked off their entry fee.
The VCU Health Richmond Marathon begins at Grace St. and 5th and follows a circuitous route to the Canal Walk on the scenic riverfront, at 5th and Tredegar St. Plenty of help and amenities are stationed along the route. Water and Nuun Replenisher gel are available every 2 miles until mile 20 and every 1 mile after that. Bathrooms are also available at each water stop. GU energy gel will be available at Mile 14 and Mile 21, and there are Junk Food Stops at Miles 16 and 22 and Pickle Juice at Mile 23. Medical aid will also be available along the course if needed.
There's no hurry to finish the race, but the course will only be open for 7 hours total, and provided services will be shut down sequentially as the day progresses. Therefore, to continue availing yourself of the water and other amenities, you must maintain a minimum speed of around 4 miles an hour - a brisk walk.
If 26.2 miles seems daunting, there are several other races being run that day. The CarMax Richmond Half Marathon starts just one block over but covers an entirely different city area. And the Allianz Partners 8K is just under 5 miles, starting at 7 am.
Even if you're not available on the 13th, you can still run. If you sign up to compete virtually, you can run anytime in November and get all the perks of competing in person - as well as all the swag. If you're ambitious, you can do the Richmond Challenge: Run one race on race day and the other two virtually throughout the month for a chance at even more glory and prestige.

Designing a beautiful home is no easy task. While it may seem simple, it takes a keen, knowledgeable eye to create an interior with that special wow factor! Our real estate agents show a variety of homes that reflect beautiful design style, and we see the difference it makes when buying or selling a home.
As interior designers know, it requires vision, skill, and planning to understand the impact of scale, color, and balance in your home. Many design decisions go into a well-designed interior. In Richmond homes for sale, savvy buyers are looking for interiors that reflect current design trends, so they don't have to sink money into costly design mistakes.
Scale is so important when designing interior spaces. It's more than just taking measurements to make sure everything fits. Scale means understanding how the size of the room relates to interior furnishings like rugs, furniture, lighting, artwork, and accessories. The slightest mistake can quickly destroy the design style and ambiance in a room. Common design mistakes to avoid:
Over-Sized Furnishings – The scale of your furniture must work with the scale of your room. Large rooms with high ceilings are great for oversized sofas, large tables, and heavy armories, but using them in small rooms will make the space feel cramped and uncomfortable.
Small Area Rugs – If you fall in love with an area rug that doesn't fit your budget, don't buy a smaller rug just because it does. Area rugs should be anchored under furniture pieces, not floating between them, leaving the room feeling sparse and unfinished.
Colors used in paints, wallpapers, textiles, window treatments, rugs, and accessories have a big impact on your room's comfort and light. While lighter colors reflect light and make rooms feel more spacious, darker colors absorb light, making rooms feel smaller. When choosing interior colors, avoid mistakes that may create an uncomfortable room:
Dark Colors – Using dark colors on low ceilings or walls in small rooms can create a gloomy, uncomfortable space that feels claustrophobic, especially when rooms have minimal natural light from windows and doors.
Glossy Paints – While high-gloss and semi-gloss paints are great for doors and trim, they often create too much sheen on walls and ceilings. Glossy paints should be avoided on stucco or textured walls where surfaces are uneven or flawed.
Creating good balance in a room means paying attention to important details like the ceiling height, interesting focal points, and symmetrical or asymmetrical features. To avoid mistakes that ruin balance:
Create a focal point
Vary heights of furnishings, accessories, and light fixtures
Spread colors and patterns evenly throughout the room
If your room has a built-in focal point like a beautiful stone fireplace, emphasize it with spot or track lighting. If there's no focal point in the room, you can create one with a wall of colorful paintings or black and white photos. To create a good balance, keep frame colors and finishes to a minimum and make sure that artwork complements other things in the room. Neighbors can make a big difference in determining how happy you are in your community. Good neighbors can make your neighborhood feel supportive but bad neighbors can be a constant pain point.
One of the first steps toward having a good neighbor is to set the right tone by being a good neighbor yourself. The following tips from our REALTORS® will help you be an ideal neighbor in your neighborhood.
Make it easy for your neighbors to approach you by smiling and waving at them and saying hello when you get a chance. It's also a nice gesture to make cookies and take them over if you see a new family has moved in.
As you get to know them a little better, offer to help by babysitting or providing other small favors.
Different neighborhoods have different tolerances for noise. If you're living in a community filled with retirees, they may appreciate more peace and quiet than a neighborhood with lots of young children.
A good rule of thumb in any neighborhood is to limit loud noises to between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Also, if you're planning a large party, talk to your neighbors and invite them to the party. Even if they don't intend to come, make sure they know they can come to you with any concerns.
Come up with a way to share useful news, such as a neighborhood newsletter, Facebook group, or posts on nextdoor.com. This will help build a sense of community as neighbors get to know each other.
While the friendly exchange of information is a positive thing, gossip isn't. If someone approaches you with gossip, change the subject by asking them an unrelated question, such as how the garden is doing, or how their kids like their new school.
Your neighbors have to see the outside of your home and your yard, which can affect their home values. Keep your yard regularly mown and make sure your shrubs, trees, and other landscaping don't grow over into your neighbor's yard.
Keep your yard free of excess clutter. For example, put away your children's toys at the end of the day rather than leaving them scattered all over the yard. While you're at it, keep your outdoor décor to a tasteful minimum.
If you have a problem with your neighbor, try addressing it directly with him or her before involving anyone else. For example, if their dogs get out or bark too much, talk about a solution instead of calling Animal Control. It's also important to refrain from gossiping with other residents about the issue.
And if your neighbors have an issue with you, listen to their concerns calmly and respectfully and try to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
If you live in a condo or neighborhood with a homeowners' association (HOA), abide by its rules regarding streets, the pool, clubhouse, or other common areas. Don't be the neighbor who parks on the street if it's against the rules, leaves a mess, or lets their kids disturb other residents by being too rambunctious.
