Lewis Ginter

The holiday season is upon us here in Richmond, and there's no better time to pay a visit to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has a lot going on in every season. It even has gardens that are specifically designed to look great in winter, and with several exciting events coming up, this might just be our REALTORS®' favorite time to visit the Botanical Garden. Here's what you need to know about exploring the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden this holiday season.

Visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

You'll find year-round beauty at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, which spans 50 acres of lush outdoor and indoor space. World-class botanical displays include more than a dozen themed gardens, all within minutes of many Richmond homes for sale

Of particular interest, this time of year is the Winter Garden, which features plant species that have been specifically chosen for their unique and beautiful winter colors. You'll also want to spend some time in the Conservatory, an 11,000-square-foot indoor space crowned by a 63-foot dome, where tropical plants thrive year-round.

Plants from all around the world now have permanent homes in the conservatory, including a palm house and whole wings dedicated to cacti, succulents and semi-tropical plants. The garden shop and cafe are also must-visit stops during any season.

Holiday Events at the Botanical Garden

No matter the season, it's always a good idea to check the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens' online calendar, because chances are there's something fun and exciting coming up. That's especially the case in winter, and these are some of the upcoming holiday events at the garden that you definitely don't want to miss:

  • Dominion Energy GardenFest of Lights - November 20, 2023 through January 7
This is something we look forward to all year. Every holiday season, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is illuminated with Richmond's most spectacular lighting display. Millions of lights will illuminate the garden paths and adorn the overhanging trees during GardenFest of Lights, and a variety of food and drink will be available at the onsite Garden Cafe and Tea House. There will also be a beautiful live Christmas tree in the Conservatory, model trains nightly in the Kelly Education Center, and a warming fire in the Children's Garden. Be sure to get your tickets in advance!

  • GardenFest Behind-the-Scenes Tour - December 5 & 19
If you're curious to know what goes on behind the scenes to make the GardenFest of Lights a reality every year, you'll have your chance to find out. Guided Behind-the-Scenes Tours take place at 3 pm and 4:30 pm on Tuesday, December 5 and Tuesday, December 19, providing a unique insight into how and where the magic happens.

  • Holiday Wreath Workshop - December 9
Creating your own wreath for holiday decor isn't as hard as you might think, at least not with the assistance of designer David Pippin at one of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's Holiday Wreath Workshops. Workshops take place at 9 am and 1 pm on Saturday, December 9. All wreath-making materials will be provided, along with cookies, hot cider and cocoa to snack on.
