Fall Home Renovations

Whether you're ready to contact our REALTORS® to sell your home or want to tackle some of the items on your to-do list, fall is a terrific time for home renovation projects. By starting your projects now, you're more likely to complete the work before the holidays or the new year. Here are a few fall renovation projects that can help you add value to your home.

  • Replace Your Single-Pane Windows
While single-pane windows are common in many homes, they're a poor decision if you want to optimize your property's energy efficiency. Double-pane windows are an excellent upgrade; the design keeps your home's warm air inside, helping you lower your heating bills. In the summer months, double-pane windows are equally efficient at keeping your home's refreshing cool air from escaping.
  • Spread Mulch Around Your Trees and Flower Gardens
If you plan to list your home with other Richmond homes for sale, you'll want to optimize your property's curb appeal. Curb appeal refers to how your home looks when viewed from the street. A home with high curb appeal is worth more than a home with overgrown vegetation, peeling paint, and lots of weeds and dead plants. Mulch is a fast, simple way to boost your home's curb appeal; a layer of mulch instantly brightens your property's exterior. Mulch will also protect your garden's perennials from harsh winter weather and hungry pests searching for an easy meal.
  • Refresh Your Door
Updating your door is another fantastic way to increase your home's curb appeal; depending on your project, you might also make your home more energy efficient, further increasing its value. A door that's in good shape will benefit from a fresh coat of paint. Revive your door's current color, or opt for a bright, attention-grabbing hue. For the best results, paint your door when temperatures are 50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher during the day and 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher overnight. You can also replace the hardware if you want to completely overhaul its look. Check the weather stripping around your door; if it's damaged or falling apart, replace it to ensure your door doesn't let chilly winter breezes penetrate your home. If your door has a lot of damage or doesn't offer your desired level of security, you can replace it with an updated option that better meets your needs.
  • Upgrade Your Furnace
Though many furnaces state that they have a lifespan of 20 years, this doesn't mean that your furnace will remain energy-efficient for the whole 20 years. As a furnace nears the end of its lifespan, you might notice that rooms don't heat evenly and that your heating bills have increased. Your furnace will use more energy trying to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Replacing your furnace with a newer model will increase your home's energy efficiency and its value. You'll also notice ongoing savings in the form of lower heating bills.
