Belle Island

The Richmond area is brimming with natural beauty. One of the most beautiful local sites to see is Belle Isle. A preserved park island, Belle Isle is located right in the middle of downtown. Situated in the James River, it offers lovely views of the river and land alike. Our real estate agents often advise people who are new to Richmond to visit Belle Isle. Here are the key details worth knowing before you visit.

  • Location and Access
As mentioned, Belle Isle is located in downtown Richmond. You'll need to park downtown and walk to the island on foot. There is a parking lot known as the Belle Isle Parking Lot located along Tredegar Street near the intersection with Brown's Island Way. Additional parking is available on E. Byrd and 5th Streets.

There are two bridges that lead from downtown to Belle Isle. The first leaves from Tredegar Street; it's a pedestrian bridge directly under the Lee Bridge. The second option is a bridge that begins near 22nd Street. This one is older and more rustic.

Belle Isle is open between sunrise and sunset.

  • Hiking, Walking, and Biking
One of the best ways to see Belle Isle is to hike or cycle along the island's trails. There are several trails to choose from.

Duke's Loop Trail is a loop trail towards the north of the island. It offers great views of the river and Belle Isle Quarry Pond. Gabriel's Southern Ridge Trail, which branches off from Duke's Loop Trail, gives you some elevation along a natural ridge.

If you like mountain biking, try the Belle Isle Pump Track. This BMX track has some fun obstacles and tight turns to navigate.

  • Fishing
If you love fishing, then plan on tossing a line out while you're on Belle Isle. Fishing is allowed at the quarry pond, which is wheelchair-accessible. You can also take a paddle boat out on the pond for a relaxing morning.

  • Historic Sites
Learn about the history of Belle Isle while you are there. One of the best-known historic sites is the old power plant, which is located towards the center of the island. It was once a hydroelectric plant that generated power from the rushing James River. The plant was decommissioned in the 1960s.

  • Rock Climbing
If you're a rock climber, then you absolutely must spend some time on Belle Isle. The granite wall is popular among local climbers and is said to offer a few challenging routes. If you're thirsty after your climb, don't worry. There are water-filling stations scattered all over the island. There are also porta potties available for public use.

We hope you get a chance to visit Belle Isle this summer. We highly recommend taking a day trip so you can spend plenty of time walking, fishing, and exploring the historical sites. If you're new to the area and still looking for a place to call home, contact us soon. We'll help you find the best Richmond homes for sale near this and other key attractions.
