Landscaping Projects To Do Before Listing Your Home

Are you considering listing your home for sale in the next few months? When we help clients find Richmond homes for sale, one of the first things they comment on is the landscaping. So, it's often worth putting some time and money into your landscape before you put your home on the market. Your yard makes the first impression, and you really want it to be a good one. Here are some simple landscaping projects that can help enhance your home's curb appeal.

Fill in Bald Spots on the Lawn
Are there any dead or brown patches on your lawn? Take the time to re-plant them. First, use a small trowel to dig up any dead grass. Loosen the soil that is now on top, and work a little topsoil and compost into it. Then, scatter some grass seed over the area. Water it in, and top it with some straw as protection.

For the next week or two, water your grass seed every day. Once it germinates, you can brush the straw off the top so it receives lots of sunlight. Before long, your lawn will be even and beautiful again.
Re-Edge Your Garden Beds
The edges of garden beds tend to start looking overgrown and uneven as they age. Luckily, it does not take long to re-edge a garden bed. This is easiest to do with an edger, which is basically a horizontal blade on a stick. Drive it straight down into the soil, removing the shaggy edge of the garden bed. Move the blade over a little, and do this again. Keep going until you've created a sharp edge along the entire bed.

If you do not have an edger, you can use a spade shovel for this project. Just make sure you don't drive it too deep, or the curve of the blade will show in your cuts.
Add a Pavers Walkway
If you don't have a walkway leading to your front door, this is the perfect time to add one. You'll need to dig the grass off the top of the lawn. Then, lay down pavers in the path you have cut. You can either leave a little space between them or put them directly next to one another.

Line your path with some flowers or shrubs, and you'll be set to go. You can create a similar path in your backyard if desired. It can be nice to have a path leading from the patio to the grilling area, for example.
Put Some Potted Flowers in Your Garden Beds
If you want to dress up your garden beds without spending a lot of time or money, purchase a couple of potted plants. Look for colorful flowers that complement the look of your home. This is a good opportunity to add a pop of color, so don't be shy.
Label Your Plants
If you already have a fairly nice landscape with some perennials that come back every year, consider labeling them. Make some matching signs with the names of plants on them, and drive them into the ground.

Home buyers will appreciate knowing the identity of the plants in your gardens. Plus, the signs can be a cute addition.
