How to Select the Perfect Air Purifier for Your Home
Air purifiers have become popular household devices in the last few years. An air purifier is designed to filter out particles from the air and cleans the air of everything from dust and other airborne particles to common allergens such as pet dander and cigarette smoke. Choosing a good air purifier, however, requires a little understanding of how they work and what standards they have to meet. Here are a few things our real estate agents recommend knowing before you buy an air purifier.
- Where are you going to put your air purifier?
Where you'll put your air purifier is important. If you're only going to get one, the most common recommendation is to place it in the bedroom since the time you spend sleeping typically makes up the majority of the time you spend at home. You'll find that some Richmond homes for sale even have a whole house air purifier, which hooks up to your HVAC system for better coverage. - How large of a space is the air purifier rated for?
An air purifier will typically be rated for a certain size space. This is especially important to know when you're trying to determine where to put yours or whether you need to buy more than one for your home. - Does the air purifier use HEPA filters?
HEPA filters are the highest standard of particle removal. HEPA means "high-efficiency particulate air," and in order to use the HEPA label, a filter needs to remove 99.7 percent of anything in the air .3 microns or larger. Beware of air purifiers that boast of "HEPA-like" filters or don't mention anything about HEPA at all, as they likely won't be able to perform the job you're buying them for. - What types of pollutants does the air purifier remove?
While all HEPA-rated air filters have to meet the minimum requirements of removing 99.7 percent of particles from the air, different air purifiers are better at different things. For instance, if you're trying to remove odors before you list your home for sale, look for an air purifier with an activated carbon filter. Other units are rated high for the removal of pet dander and can help you remove allergens from the air before selling your home. - How much noise will the air purifier make?
When choosing an air purifier, be sure to look at the noise rating on the device, which is listed in decibels in the device specs. Depending on where you'll be using it, you may want an ultra-quiet device, such as if you plan to put yours in the bedroom. - How much energy does the air purifier use?
Just like with any appliance, there are a variety of types of air purifiers, and they all use different amounts of energy. If you want one that won't cost a lot to run, be sure to look for one with the Energy Star rating, just like you would with other household appliances. - What maintenance will the air purifier require?
It's also a good idea to look at what maintenance an air purifier is expected to require so that you can get a better idea of what it will cost to run over the long term. For instance, HEPA filters typically only need to be replaced every year, while activated carbon filters (for odor control) need to be replaced about every six months, and pre-filters often need replacement every three months.
